How to Read the NutriCode
- Above the colored bars of the NutriCode, you will find the foods' name and a
short description. Click here for information on what each NutriCode bar symbolizes.
- Next to the foods' name is the food's code number in brackets, i.e. [73790].
- After the food's name, description and food code number is the food's portion
amount in a common household measurement. The gram amount for the food's
portion to aid global metric use is found above the calorie amount in blue.

- Calories
for the food portion are always in red (398), and precede the colored bar code.
Above the last of each 5 consecutive identical NutriCode bars, are small hatch
marks. These hatch marks are an adding and counting aid [5, 10, 15, 20, etc.].
The NutriCode is useful to individuals that are just getting started in
improving their nutrition and want to focus on the basics. For instance, only 3 wide bars (fat, carbohydrate and protein)
are used in the Basic or Advanced NutriCodes to show the food's 3 main calorie
components.
The number of each of these 3 wide bars in relation to each other instantly conveys approximate percentages of fat, carbohydrate or protein. For
example, if there are equal numbers of wide bars to reflect fat, carbohydrate
or protein content, it is easy to recognize that the food is composed of nearly
equal calorie amounts and percentages of fat, carbohydrate or protein
(approximately 33 & 1/3% fat, 33 & 1/3% carbohydrate and 33 & 1/3% protein).
If the food has 8 wide fat bars, 2 wide carbohydrate bars and no protein bars, the food has no protein content and therefore gets approximately 8/10 or 80% of its total calories
from fat and approximately 2/10 or 20% of its total calories from carbohydrates.
To use the NutriCode properly it is important to know when to use the 4 or 19
bar view option. If you are dieting, trying to lose or gain weight, use the
easier 4 bar option. If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, heart
disease, cancer, liver disease, are pregnant or are using the HealthKeeper to
improve your nutrition, use the 19 bar option.
